Product Info
A wonderfully drinkable Bordeaux-style blend that ages beautifully, this complex red is named in honour of a former owner of the Rustenberg farm, who bought it in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phylloxera crisis. It’s one of the estate’s flagship wines – a memorable expression of Stellenbosch’s finest vineyards.
- John X Merriman Red Blend
- A powerful wine that rewards aging
- Worth decanting in its youth
- As a young wine, it expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits, complemented by cigar tobacco and sour cherry notes
- As the wine ages and its tannins soften, a softer, more savoury palate develops, revealing wonderful drinkability and complexity
Originally granted to a German settler in 1682, Rustenberg farm was bought by Peter and Pamela Barlow in 1941. It is now under the custodianship of their son, Simon Barlow, who’s driven by a vision of “absolute passion and total dedication to quality in both the vineyard and cellar”. The farm crafts wine from predominantly red Bordeaux grape varieties, nurtured in the rich soils of Stellenbosch.
